Take me out to the ball game

Take me out to the ball game
As a kid, I was a big baseball fan. Little League ball was as far as I ever went as a mediocre player (at best), but as a pre-teen, I loved the game. In the years since Little League, I’ve spent a lot of time away from baseball. Slowly but surely, though, I’ve found my way back, with a little help from W. P. Kinsella, Paul Quarrington and pick-up ball down at McKittrick Park. Recently, I’ve gotten a chance to review some new baseball books for the Free Press, and cover some junior ball for The Herald, too. High school hockey season wraps up

High school hockey season wraps up
It was a wild ride while it lasted, folks. But all good things must come to an end, eh? The 2016-17 high school hockey season came to a close here this past week in beautiful Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. While I jumped into the swing of things a couple weeks late, it was fun touching base with each of the northeastern school teams over the course of the season. The first, back in December, was the new memoir from legendary broadcaster Bob Cole, the voice of hockey for a generation or more. The second, more recently, was recently retired tough-guy-turned-All-Star-MVP John Scott‘s look back on his career. Both worth a look if you’re into that sorta thing, though I wouldn’t say that either are...

Back on the high school hockey beat

Back on the high school hockey beat
Been enjoying catching up on the high school hockey scene over here in northeast Winnipeg since I got back on the beat in November. It’s always interesting talking with coaches and the kids playing at this level. They’re serious about hockey, but still playing it for the love of the game rather than a drive to make it to the Big Show. The players and coaches talk honestly about what they’re doing right, and where they can improve. All these kids are balancing their school, hockey, and regular life schedules and all seem genuinely excited about lacing up for each game. I’m...
